Getting to Bowfell

Bowfell is situated close to Keswick town centre and the historical Castlerigg Stone Circle at the heart of the Northern Lake District.   The nearest train station to Bowfell is Penrith where there is connecting buses into Keswick (see getting around).  By car from the M6, follow the A66 to Keswick.  Take the exit for Low Briery and follow the Penrith Road towards Keswick.  Turn left onto Amleside Road and Bowfell is sign posted, 100 yards up the hill.

Getting There by Rail

The Lake District is easily accessible by rail Virgin Trains from London (approx £40/£80rtn 3hrs), Birmingham (Approx £35/£70rtn 2hrs), Manchester (Approx £40/£60rtn 1h30m) and Glasgow (Approx £40/£80rtn 1h40m). Alight at Penrith station for Keswick and the Northern Lakes and alight at Oxenholme station for Windermere and the Southern Lakes.  Penrith station has a connecting bus service into Keswick (see getting around) whilst Windermere has a connecting train and bus services from Oxenholme.   

A wonderfully scenic railway journey runs from the Yorkshire Dales and Eden Valley via The Settle to Carlisle Railway. There is also a link from Newcastle via The Tyne Valley Line, into Carlisle and Whitehaven. Click here for National Rail Journey Planner.    

Getting There by Bus 

There are a number of coaches and express buses National Express which travel to Cumbria from various links around the country.  Carlisle is the main bus station serving the Northern Lakes.   

Getting There by Car

The M6 motorway connects the Lake District with the north and south of the country.  The A66 leads into northern area of the Lake District and onto to the coast. The A590 leads to the southern area of the Lake District and around the coast, with the A590 and the A66 being linked down the central area of the Lakes by the A591. At peak times the roads and lanes around the villages and towns can be fairly congested.
